Mizani Afro Catwalk Awards Live Finals 2012

The hair care brand Mizani (owned by the L’Oréal group) is the ultimate in luxury hair care for the woman of colour.

According to the corporate website:

…the word “MIZANI” means balance in Swahili, the word “MIZANI” means balance and refers to the central concept behind the brand. Each MIZANI formula whether used alone or in combination, gently works to balance the forces of beauty and chemistry, creating radiantly healthy hair. The founding principle of the brand is “Beauty and Chemistry in Balance.”

Since it entered the UK market in the mid 90s, the brand has grown in leaps and bounds.  According to an article in the Financial Times last year,  UK sales of the Mizani range doubled in 2011!

The article also goes on to say that ‘community hairdressers are proliferating at a rate of about eight per week on British high streets – or roughly one-quarter the rate at which pubs are closing – providing the another example of the burgeoning growth in ethnic minority markets.

Mizani supports the growth of excellence within  Afro hairdressing by hosting the annual Mizani Afro Catwalk Look Award, which brings together the UKs most talented and fashion led hairdressers to demonstrate and showcase their creative skill in Afro hair artistry.  This years final took place on at the 24th of April at the L’Oréal Acadamy right here in London.

Over 900 entries flooded in from across the nation yet only 6 salons were selected to go through to the live final.

The salons that made the final cut were:

Anne Veck – Oxford

Clipso – Watford

CRC Cutting Room Creative – Chapel Allerton Leeds and Albion Street Leeds

Sean Hanna  – Sutton

TONI&GUY – Regents Street, London

Each salon was asked to create a look on a model of African/Caribbean descent that captures the key A/W 12 catwalk trends in just 2 hours and 30 minutes!

My favorite is Clipso. It combines volume, colour and a cropped look. A lot of skill has been shown in creating the texture of the hair! A definite winner

I already follow both you and Mizani UK on Twitter so, with regards to my favourite look… I’d have to choose Toni&Guy Regent St. The reason being, I’ve recently fallen in love with natural updos! I have even been trying out updos on my own hair lately but I love how sleek this one is, the colour is a nice touch and I’m slightly jealous of how thick/healthy the models hair is!

I adore curls so CRC Cutting Room Creative’s look would be a close second.
