Black Beauty and Style in the British Media – Christmas 2012 Special

Ho Ho Ho!

Here is my collection of fun and festive imagery showcasing Black beauty and style in the British media.

It has been wonderful to be able to document such imagery throughout the year – do check out my Pinterest board dedicated to the subject!

As the recent Census results indicated that Britain is more diverse than ever before and that cities and towns across the nation are becoming more multicultural, I hope that the mainstream press will reflect this diversity more readily!

Let’s see how it will unfold in 2013…but in the meantime enjoy this final montage of 2012!

Selfridges – ‘Not Your Usual Christmas’

Creative Director of the ‘Best Department Store in the World‘, Alannah Weston, got together with world renowned photographer Bruce Webber to create this year’s Christmas campaign. It is irreverent, fantastical and fun!

Marks and Spencer – ‘The Greatest Hits this Christmas’ campaign

The M&S Christmas adverts are always highly anticipated and this year the company decided to forgo the celebs and opt for models that reflected the average customer! The ad features models of all ages, races and sizes…and although I did like the celebrity cast of M&S ads of the past, this campaign was a god effort by one of the nation’s favourite retailer.

The 50” ad was shot by London-based agency Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R and directed by renowned pop video director, Jake Nava. Nava is credited with Beyonce’s Single Ladies video….

…from this…

…to this!!

Let’s give it up for the kids at the end! #multiculturalbritain

Baileys ‘Cream with Spirit’ campaign

This campaign is not strictly a Christmas campaign per se, but the timing of its launch in early November was clearly targeting the Christmas shopping season!

The TV ad was “inspired by the 30s films of the Hollywood director Busby Berkeley, renowned for his ability to turn dancers into human kaleidoscopes” according to Campaign magazine.

The print campaign has been featured in many of the glossy mags.

Paul Mitchell Deco-dent Christmas 2012

I was on the bus in north London a few weeks ago and I saw this image in the window of a hair salon…

…it is part of Paul Mitchell’s Christmas campaign that is inspired by the roaring 20’s.

Here is how to achieve the look which was created by Lucie Doughty, Paul Mitchell’s Editorial Director.

Prep damp hair with Super Skinny® Serum and blow-dry the hair smooth with the Express Ion Dry® Turbolight™ and the 413 Sculpting Brush.

Spritz with Hot Off the Press® for heat protection and lasting hold.

Take diagonal sections of hair and straighten with Express Ion Smooth 1.25.

Finish with a spritz of The Shine™.

An elegant look that is easy to achieve!
