Product Review: @Ojon Rare Blend Oil

Hair oils are the new black!

From Kérastase to TRESemme it seems that every hair care brand is launching an oil to join their portfolio. Following the success of Moroccanoil, hair oils now adorn themselves of every major beauty retailer and has been dubbed the hottest trend in hair care by many in the sector. The oils are lauded for thier moisturising and strengthening properties and have been wholeheartedly embraced by the mainstream industry

As most of us black women have always used some form of oil based product/pomade on our hair, the value of using such items is not a revelation – but as many of the products that we did use in the past were heavily laden with mineral oils and other ingredients that weighed the hair down and attracted excess dirt and pollutants to the hair, the formulations of this new generation of hair oils are much more sophisticated and efficacious.

I was kindly sent the latest addition to the Ojon range – the new Rare Blend Oil.

The brand has garnered a following with women of all hair types and textures. The launch of the oil organised by the US Ojon team in June of this year (in New York city), was attended by women of all backgrounds – and it looked like it was an amazing event!

The brand is also a favourite of the beauty editors of magazines such as Essence , Ebony and O Magazine. In fact Oprah’s long time personal stylist Andre Walker listed Ojon products amongst his top 10 products every woman should own in recent online interview on MadameNoire.com

Ojon Rare Blend Oil – What Is It?

Well, according to the brand, it is..

A multi-benefit hair oil featuring natural oils to help repair severe damage while providing intense hydration, taming frizz, boosting shine and protecting against damage caused by heat styling and environmental exposure.
UNIQUE CHARACTERISTICS features seven naturally-reparative oils from around the world known for their unique composition to address a spectrum of hair concerns.

KEY INGREDIENTS – the 7 oils

Ojon Oil, the signature oil used in the range is rich in essential lipids (fatty acids) and has been clinically proven to penetrate deep within the hair shaft to repair and seal the cuticle and it helps to build the hair’s natural resistance to future damage.

Rouge Oleifera -repairs damage
Tahitian Monoi Oil – protects and adds shine
Marula Oil – restores and heals
Kalahari Melon Oil – boosts moisture
Kukui Oil – rich in amino acids (the building blocks that make up protein molecules)
Ximenia Oil – a rich conditioning oil

The oil does contain the silicone Dimethicone, which aids smoothing and detangling.

Before use the product is shaken to mix the tri – coloured liquid together to create a shell pink emulsion. I really like the thick, syrupy consistency of the oil, as it is easy to control the dosage and does not leak down the side of the bottle when it is stood on ones dresser (a pet peeve of mine!!).

A little goes a long way and I found that 2 10p sized amounts of the oil are enough to style and restore the shine to my new curly hair extensions (courtesy of Errol Douglas Salon!). I have a lot of hair at the moment, so the fact that only a small amount of the oil is required is certainly a bonus, because at £29 for 45ml, the Ojon oil is one of the more expensive offerings if it is compared to other premium hair oils (Morrocanoil is £30.45 for 100ml and the Kérastase ELIXIR ULTIME Oil is £29.50 for 125ml).

The oil was not at all greasy, and has a pleasant tropical fragrance. I tend to use the oil at night, distributing I evenly into my curls and twisting my hair into two. In the morning my hair is shiny and the curls separate with ease.

The product comes in a cut away box which makes it easy for the consumer to ‘shake and see’ the pink emulsion, but for the size and the price of the product a lovely glass bottle would have added that extra touch of luxury!

Still, I am really happy with the performance of this oil on my hair extensions! Just for the record. my sister who has relaxed hair used the oil on her damp hair prior to blow drying and again it provided a healthy looking, luminous sheen without the oil slick!

I like this product a lot and if you purchase this or any other Ojon product via the Ojon.co.uk website you get a full-sized Damage Reverse Restorative shampoo and conditioner set worth £41.00!!

Have you tried any product from the Ojon range? Let me know your thoughts if you have!

Hmmm I like Ojon. I used a few products when I was newly natural. I may treat myself to this in the new year, I’m curious how it would work on my curls.

Keen to try this. I’ve tried Ojon products through work and found the only thing off putting for me was the fragrance! Couldn’t dig it.

Thanks for reading! The fragrance of this oil is quite pleasant…although it doesn’t last for long.
