I have been seeing many beauty bloggers posting their new year resolutions, whether it be an updated skincare regime or a determination to battle the bulge! Why not add ‘taking care of your smile’ to your beauty ‘to-do list’ this year!

Our smiles are a beauty asset we all possess, irrespective of height or size and it is often what endears us to others.

So what can we do to take better care of our beauty treasure?

5 Biggest Toothbrushing Mistakes

For some reason, brushing your teeth is part of the morning and evening cleaning routine that’s sort of taken for granted. A quick swirl with the brush and you’re on to your cleanse/tone/moisturise routine, without a thought for what’s going on just above (and below) your gum line.

Of course, it’s not just about getting a bright smile and fresh breath: teeth that are not cleaned, or not cleaned properly, may lead to serious dental problems. Plaque build up can lead to tooth decay, cavities and gum disease.

So it’s time to put some thought into your brushing routine! Pick out an affordable electric toothbrush available from Argos and check out five top tips for sparkling pearly whites:

1. When cleaning the teeth, the toothbrush should be moved in small circular movements around each tooth. Moving the brush from side to side may seem a more natural way to clean them, but this is not the way recommended by dentists because is important to clean the inside of the teeth as well as the outside. Using an Oral B electric toothbrush for a deep clean can be helpful.

Teeth can be cleaned more often, but it should not be done until at least an hour has passed after a meal, particularly when fruit, fizzy drinks or other acidic food has been eaten. This is because acid can soften enamel and this can then be damaged by the toothbrush. After an hour, the acid will be neutralised by the saliva and the teeth can be safely cleaned.

This is because the start of cleaning teeth is usually done with more care and attention than when the task is almost finished. When it is nearly completed, it may be not so thorough. Therefore, if the starting place is varied each section of the mouth will sometimes be at the beginning and get the best cleaning.

4. The toothbrush should be allowed to dry between uses. If it is always damp, this will allow bacteria to grow. After use, rinse the brush to remove bacteria and prevent it being reintroduced onto the teeth with the next brushing. Then shake it to get rid of as much water as possible. If a brush is damp, it also makes the bristles more likely to become misshapen as it is used.

5. Toothbrushes need to be replaced when the bristles lose their springiness and are permanently misshapen (which happens quicker if you don’t dry your brush properly). It is important to keep a check on the condition of the brush to ensure that it is not damaged and therefore ineffective.
