The recent Miss Jamaica, Kaci Fennell showcased her perfect pins and butter-kissed skin at the recent 63rd Annual Miss Universe competition – and now it is easier for us #brownbeauties to benefit from laser treatment to achieve a smooth, hair free finish.

Laser treatment is a fantastic way to reduce the growth of hair on the legs, arms, underarms and even the face. For a long time it was thought that these treatments were unsuitable for darker skin tones – but this is no longer the case!

The improvement in the technology of the lasers that are used in the best clinics mean that everyone can benefit from these techniques.

The early generation of laser hair removal devices were only recommended for lighter skin types. These lasers weren’t able to safely and effectively remove hair from people with darker tones – which is measured by the Fitzpatrick scale.

The Fitzpatrick scale (also Fitzpatrick skin typing test, or Fitzpatrick phototyping scale) is a numerical classification schema for human skin colour. It was developed in 1975 by Thomas B. Fitzpatrick, a Harvard dermatologist, as a way to classify the typical response of different types of skin to ultraviolet (UV) light. Later, it was updated to also contain a wider range of skin types. The Fitzpatrick scale remains a recognized tool for dermatological research into human skin pigmentation. Types V and VI were deemed unsuitable for laser treatment.

This is no longer the case with the introduction of a new type of laser that has properties more suited for use with darker skin tones, such as the Nd:YAG Laser which are used at the City Hair Removal Clinic in London.

The Nd:YAG laser has been in use for laser hair removal for around 10 years after scientists did some research on its efficacy.

The laser has a wavelength that’s higher than any other laser suitable for hair removal and typically operates at 1064nm, thus the wavelengths are longer. Fast repetition rates and large coverage areas allow large areas of the body to be treated quickly too.
