THE 2013 @ColourTrophy @MIZANIUK AFRO LOOK AWARD FINALISTS HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED!

1760-bounded-w765xh350 Earlier last month I announced the launch of the 2013 Mizani Afro Look Award and since then the judging panel have whittled the 900 plus entries (yes, 900!!) down to six finalist salons who will now go on to take their amazing skills in hairdressing to the live competition floor in a bid to secure a prestigious grand final award during the highly acclaimed 58th annual L’Oréal Colour Trophy.

This year’s super talented live finalists are Jason Liddiard Hairdressing in Rainham, Kent, TONI&GUY Chiswick, Fresh Hair Salon in Chester, Jimmy Campbell in Fulham, London, CRC – Cutting Room Creative in Leeds and TONI&GUY Clapham Junction.

These salons will now head to the L’Oréal Professionnel London Academy on Wednesday 8th May to showcase their model look. The brief they have been given is to produce a ‘well-executed, inspirational, modern colour with a beautiful editorially inspired style on a female model of African / Caribbean descent, complementing an Autumn / Winter 2013/14 fashion trend to create a show-stopping look.’

Each team will be given just 2 hours and 30 minutes to achieve this to the best of their ability and wow the panel of judges with a look that blends together each of the key styling elements.

I am super excited to tell you that I will be present at the live finals on the 8th of May! I will be live tweeting and keeping you all abreast of the action that will be taking place on the salon floor! I am really looking forward to seeing the transformations take shape and the visions of the stylists come to fruition! Afro, multi-textured hair is SO versatile, so I cant wait to see how each finalist interprets the brief! The fact the the final is live really stretches the competencies and the capabilities of the stylists, they not only have to be creative but they also have to manage their time and their team to an optimum level.

The 2012 Live Final

The final is all about execution – this adds another dimension to the competition that I feel really validates the expertise of the finalists selected. Keep an eye on my Twitter feed for the latest news leading up to the event and make sure you also follow Mizani UK and the L’Oréal Colour Trophy too!

The exciting panel of judges this year has each made their mark on the hairdressing industry and are renowned for their skills in afro hair. As I stated in the previous post, the panel is without a doubt some of the leading names in British Afro styling (go #teamAfroGB!!).

The judges include multi award winner Charlotte Mensah, Michelle Thompson from the Francesco Group alongside the highly accomplished Junior Green and international session stylist, Eugene Davis.

Here is some of their award winning, editorial work…

What will the judges be looking for on the day of the live final?

Eugene says:

“I will be looking what’s next in styling Afro hair, a marriage between technical colour, use of products and fashion lead styling. An artist that understands the complexities of Afro hair and how to achieve an amazing style without compromising the integrity of the hair.”

I will be interviewing the judges on the day of the live final too – so if you have a question for any of the judges please tweet me using the hashtag #BPLaskstheexperts.

The closely watched award will be announced as part of the prestigious L’Oréal Colour Trophy Grand Final Awards on June 3rd 2013 at the glamorous Grosvenor House Ballroom, Park Lane, London.
